FALCON HEENE TODAY SHOW >>>>> The family of six-year-old Falcon Heene, the "Balloon Boy" who was thought to have floated away across the Colorado skies in his family's home-made flying contraption, were forced to answer questions on both Good Morning America and the Today show on Friday.

Rumors have been swirling that the "Balloon Boy" story was a hoax, after Falcon was heard telling reporters that both the balloon and his hiding from his father in the family's attic was "for show." When a reporter asked Falcon about his Thursday statement, Falcon said to his mother, former Wife Swap star Mayumi Heene, "Mom, I feel like I'm going to vomit."

Mayumi then led Falcon off-camera, were gagging could be heard in the background.

On the Today show, Meredith Vieira also interviewed the Heene family. When Vieira asked Falcon's father, Richard, the same probing question, the boy vomited again--this time into a container.

On both morning shows, however, Richard Heene adamantly denied that the "Balloon Boy" story was a hoax.

national face your fears day: Thousands rallied in Washington, DC over the weekend in the National Equality March demanding full equality for LGBT people in every state.The two-day long event culminated in a march to the White House and then the capitol. Tobias Packer with Equality Floridas was one of the featured speakers.

“I come to you as a transgender person who was born,lived and works in a red state in the South. I know first hand what it´s like to be denied employment I know what it is like to be treated as less than human just because I am transgender. I know the pain and the fear that comes with the constant reminder that I am not equal under the law. That we are not equal under the law…”

Straight and gay activists came from across the country in the biggest gay rights march in DC in nearly a decade. Participants were advocating for civil rights in a number of areas, including repealing "Don't Act, Don't Tell." Lieutentant Dan Choi wore his decorated uniform for the Army National Guard.

“Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country. But when we´re telling the truth about our love our country slaps us in the face and orders us don´t ask and orders us don´t tell. Well I am telling you that the era and the time for asking is over. I am not asking anymore, I not asking anymore, I am telling, I am telling, I am telling, will you tell with me?”

In addition to long-time LGBT activists, pop icon Lady Gaga took the stage and demanded the Obama administration take action.

“Obama I know that you´re listening. Are you listening! We will continue to push you and your administration to bring your word of promise to a reality. We need change now, we demand actions now. And to Barnie Frank, we are putting more than pressure on this grass and today this grass is ours.”

On Saturday night at the annual Human Rights Campaign dinner, keynote speaker President Obama reasserted his pledge to end the controversial Don't Ask Don't Tell policy.

“We cannot afford to cut from our ranks people with the critical skills we need to fight, anymore than we can afford for our military´s integrity to force those willing to do so, into careers encumbered and compromised by having to live a lie. So I´m working with the Pentagon, its leadership and the members of the House and Senate on ending this policy, legislation has been introduced in the house to make this happen. I will end Don´t Ask Don´t Tell. That is my commitment to you.”

Some activists criticize Obama for moving too slowly on Don't Ask, Don't Tell and other civil rights issues. Equal rights advocates also want to see the Defense of Marriage Act repealed, and the passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.

WASHINGTON, 4 Oct. 2009. U.S. Department of Defense leaders have found the money they sought to speed deployment of the 15-ton Massive Ordnance Penetrator bunker buster super bomb on the B-2 stealth bomber for potential use in heavily defended areas of the world, such as Iran and North Korea.

The Air Force 708th Armament Systems Group (ARSG/PK) at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., awarded a $51.9 million contract late Friday (FA8681-09-C-0280,P00002) to the Boeing Co. in St. Louis to integrate the Massive Ordnance Penetrator on a B-2 test aircraft. The Air Force has been considering fitting the Massive Ordnance Penetrator to the B-2 since early 2007.

In August the Pentagon asked Congress for permission to move $68 million in the 2010 DOD budget to the Massive Ordnance Penetrator program to enable the first four super bombs to be carried by the B-2. The 2010 federal fiscal year began on 1 Oct., yet Congress has not yet officially approved the 2010 DOD budget authorizations.

The Massive Ordnance Penetrator, which can penetrate as deeply as 200 feet through reinforced concrete, is designed to destroy deeply buried bunkers in which enemy forces are conducting research into weapons of mass destruction, or for other high-threat purposes.

The Massive Ordnance Penetrator, commonly known as MOP, is 20 feet long, weighs 30,000 pounds, and carries 6,000-pounds of high explosives. It is designed to go deeper than any existing nuclear bunker-busting weapon. The bomb is designed to burrow more than 26 feet into the ground or through concrete before detonating.

U.S. defense contractors Northrop Grumman and Boeing Co. are developing the Massive Ordnance Penetrator under contract to Air Force Research Laboratory's Munitions Directorate at Eglin Air Force Base, and Defense Threat Reduction Agency, according to GlobalSecurity.org in Alexandria, Va.

The Massive Ordnance Penetrator, built by Boeing, is so large that the B-2 bomber could carry only one of the weapons. The super bomb has a short wing span and is satellite guided. The B-2 is a radar-evading bomber designed to penetrate sophisticated air defenses and drop explosives on valuable, heavily defended targets.

ANTIOCH, Calif. (AP) For a second day, investigators are back at the Northern California home of a couple already charged with one child abduction. They're seeking any evidence that might link them to two other cases in the 1980s. Police say similarities between the abductions of the other girls and the abduction of Jaycee Dugard led them to the Phillip Garrido home.

WESTERN SPRINGS, Ill. (AP) The funeral for the chief fundraiser of ousted Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (blah-GOY'-uh-vich) has concluded in a Chicago suburb. Blagojevich, his wife and their two daughters attended the services for 51-year-old Christopher Kelly, who died Saturday of what authorities say was a suspected overdose. His death came less than a week before he was due to enter prison to begin serving a three-year sentence for tax fraud.

Jody Powell, 65, a public relations specialist for Jimmy Carter who helped orchestrate the once-obscure Georgia governor's rise to the White House in 1976 and then served as his press secretary for the full administration, died Sept. 14 at a hospital near his home in Cambridge, on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

His death, from an apparent heart attack, was confirmed by Jack Nelson, a former Washington bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times and a friend of Mr. Powell's. After serving Carter in the White House, Mr. Powell became a founder of the Powell Tate public relations firm in Washington.

Like his boss and patron, Mr. Powell was a unlikely figure to have risen to the center of power in Washington. He grew up on a 500-acre peanut and cotton farm in Georgia and was attracted to politics at a young age.

He was a young doctoral student studying populist movements when he began working as a gofer for gubernatorial candidate Carter in 1969. His portfolio grew to include press relations, and the athletic, sandy-haired chain smoker acted as a vigorous defender of Carter when he felt his boss was unfairly maligned.

During Carter's governorship, a top opponent of busing to achieve school desegregation called the governor a "gutless peanut brain." Mr. Powell shot back a note that "respectfully" suggested the man "take a running jump and go straight to hell."

Mr. Powell became a fervent believer in Carter's chances -- running as a populist and Washington outsider -- of winning the presidency in the aftermath of the Watergate scandal that led to President Richard M. Nixon's resignation. Mr. Powell and campaign manager Hamilton Jordan became two of Carter's most trusted and effective aides during the race for the White House.

During the campaign, journalist Steven Brill wrote a potentially damaging story for Harper's magazine that ran with the headline "Jimmy Carter's Pathetic Lies." Damage control fell to Mr. Powell, and he issued a carefully reasoned 22-page rebuttal that was said to have done much to mitigate the article's impact.

Mr. Powell was occasionally faulted for not delegating enough authority, and that resulted in a rare misstep. No one reviewed Carter's fall 1976 interview with Playboy magazine. In the interview, the candidate said he periodically "committed adultery in [his] heart" and accused the late former president Lyndon B. Johnson of "lying, cheating and distorting the truth."

The story's juiciest quotes were widely picked up and damaged the candidate, and Mr. Powell accused reporters of "grubbing in the dirt." He was on collegial terms otherwise with the media, whose members enjoyed sharing confidences with Mr. Powell over beer and bourbon.

They also appreciated his talent for delivering great quips, in a cultivated Southern drawl, when news broke.

When former Georgia governor Lester G. Maddox, the state's last openly segregationist governor, tore into Carter during the presidential campaign, Mr. Powell, responded in kind. "Being called a liar by Lester Maddox is like being called ugly by a frog," Mr. Powell said.

Carter had once called Mr. Powell the person who "probably knows me better than anyone except my wife," and Mr. Powell's reputation as a presidential confidant made him one of the most effective White House press secretaries of recent history, said presidential scholar Stephen Hess.

The Monday Night Football opener has Brady and Owens providing the major star power, although many do not expect much of a contest beyond that. The Patriots are back to their usual position as Super Bowl favorites, while the Bills are just trying to avoid another 7-9 season. But the Monday Night Football schedule for opening night doesn't end there.

Since ESPN took over Monday Night Football, the opening night schedule has included a second game on the West Coast in week 1. This year, the San Diego Chargers host that game, and like the Patriots, open up a possible Super Bowl season against a team they are expected to beat easily. In this case, the Chargers visit the Raiders, who are going through their usual turmoil.

The Chargers are trying to finally break through to a championship, although they are notoriously slow starters. The Raiders just hope to overshadow the usual mess around Al Davis and his new coach, Tom Cable, who was accused of striking an assistant this off season.

The Chargers and Raiders kick off at around 10:15 p.m. est, though many on the East Coast may tune out after the Patriots-Bills game. fan check application virus : The author of the mysterious "Fan Check" Facebook application, that was the subject of intense controversy during the past week, has stepped forth to defend his creation. The developer stresses that the application does not contain malware and Facebook confirms his claim.

Two days ago, we reported that Fan Check, a Facebook application suspected of containing a virus, was at the center of a black hat SEO campaign that resulted in search results being poisoned with malicious links. Security experts were unable to confirm the nature of the application at the time, as it had already been taken offline.

Janakan Arulkumarasan, a developer based in Hong Kong and the author of "Fan Check" says that his application is clean and safe. "FanCheck is NOT a malicious app. Unfortunately, some malicious developers have been spreading a lie that it is - and encouraging people to download fake virus scanning software, which damages their computer. This is very unfortunate, but it has nothing to do with us," he stated.

According to NetworkWorld, a Facebook official confirmed that the application had been reviewed and that it contained no malware. However, Facebook did ask the developer to reformulate the app's description in order to clearly reflect that it does not collect information about passive profile visitors, which would have been a violation of the site's guidelines.

The Fan Check application monitors interactions on a user's wall in order to determine who their most active friends (fans) are. "Interactions counted include wall posts, comments, likes, gifts and other public items posted to your wall," the new description reads. This does not consist a breach of privacy, because unlike silent visitors who browse a profile anonymously, the authors of wall interactions are clearly identified on the website.

As for Fan Check's recent downtime goes, it was not caused by Facebook, but it was Mr. Arulkumarasan's decision. He explains that the application's sudden and unexpected rise in popularity since it was launched in July resulted in bandwidth problems. According to the developer, at its peak, the application had 12.5 million monthly active users and the traffic ended up costing him over $1,000 per day. This problem has been addressed in the new version by changing the technology from Flash to HTML.

With Federer's 40 match winning streak at the US Open, and with play like his between-the-legs shot to finish off Novac Djokovic yesterday, del Potro is the distant underdog at the US Open men's final 2009.

I was so touched watching the VMAs last night on MTV when Madonna took the stage with her heartfelt account of her brief friendship with Michael Jackson. The tribute that followed was tasteful and entertaining, and I felt for Janet Jackson when I saw the emotion on her face after she danced to his Scream video, in which she ordinarily appears but was cleverly erased from last night, making it a sort of 3-D experience with Michael dancing on the screen and Janet duplicating his moves on the stage in front of it.

When Katy Perry and Joe Perry did their cover of Queen's "We will rock you," I raced to the computer to google Katy and find out if maybe she was Joe's daughter. She is not. I cheered when Eminem won for "We made you," and said "you're welcome" when he thanked all his fans for "sticking by me all this time."

My daughter Justine's friend, Olivia, who had spent an entire night in the New York subway system last month acting as an extra in the pre-recorded Taylor Swift performance of "You belong with me," was nowhere to be found in the crowd of subway riders. Taking full advantage of the DVR, we paused, rewound, watched in slow-mo. But no sign of Olivia. Apparently she's on the cutting room floor somewhere.

And when the camera settled on Lady GaGa in the audience, I was sure the night had reached its lowest point. I was wrong.

When Taylor Swift took to the stage to accept her award for best female video award, Kanye West stormed the stage, ripped the microphone from her hand and said, in a nutshell, that Beyonce should be up there accepting that award instead. My heart sank for Swift, and I'm not even a fan. Can you imagine being given such an honor and not only having the spotlight stolen from you, but having someone publicly proclaim that you're not worthy?

When I suggested this morning that he should have been arrested, as any sports fan would be for charging the field or concertgoer for jumping on stage, at least one person felt such attacks "come with the territory" of fame and suggested I was being harsh.

A body believed to be that of a missing student has been found inside a wall at America's Yale University.

Annie Le, 24, had been missing since Tuesday, when she was seen entering a medical research building.

Police said she had not yet been identified but they were assuming the body found at a medical building on Sunday was Le's.

Police are treating the case as murder. Le was to be married on Sunday to a New York student Jonathan Widawsky.

"Shortly after 1700, the Connecticut state police major crime squad located the remains of a human secreted within a wall inside the building of number 10, Amistad Street," said New Haven Assistant Police Chief Peter Reichard.

GREEN BAY -- Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher is expected to undergo surgery early Monday morning after dislocating his right wrist in Sunday's 21-15 loss to the Packers.

Urlacher injured his wrist in the first quarter, although it is unclear exactly how he suffered the injury. He had an X-ray at halftime and no MRI was needed.

A surgery related to a dislocation could have something to do with bone being put back into place. The extent of Urlacher's injury wasn't evident following the game although he was expected to undergo a procedure upon the team's arrival back in Chicago after midnight.

The Bears are hopeful it will not sideline Urlacher long. He played well before exiting with three tackles.

The defensive co-captain talked last week about being in the best playing shape of his career after back and neck injuries slowed him down the previous two seasons.

Urlacher wasn't the only starting linebacker to go down in the first quarter.

Strong-side linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa suffered a sprained posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and did not return. It is unknown how long he will be out.

Hunter Hillenmeyer replaced Urlacher at middle linebacker while Nick Roach stepped in at strong-side linebacker.

Tight end Desmond Clark suffered a back injury in the third quarter and was taken to the bench. Starting left guard Frank Omiyale walked off with an injury shortly after Clark and was replaced by Josh Beekman.

Reserve cornerback Trumaine McBride exited with a knee injury and did not return.

The silencer: Johnny Knox zipped by veteran cornerback Charles Woodson, hauled in a 68-yard pass from Jay Cutler then put one finger to his mouth to quiet the Lambeau Field crowd.

The rookie fifth-round pick showed quite the confidence in his NFL debut, taking full advantage of his first opportunity to show off his blazing speed. Knox got the call as the third receiver -- ahead of Rashied Davis -- with Devin Aromashodu inactive due to a right quad injury.

Knox also caught a 14-yard slant near the end of the first half.

Playing for a contract: End Adewale Ogunleye sacked Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers twice in the first half, a good start for a player in the last year of his contract.

Ogunleye wants to sign a long-term deal to remain in Chicago, but the Bears were reluctant to do so this off-season until he proved himself on the field.

Sunday's performance may help at least start initial talks with agent Drew Rosenhaus.

Extra point: Defensive end Alex Brown picked up an unnecessary roughness penalty for shoving Packers fullback John Kuhn following Ryan Grant's 1-yard touchdown run.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a dislocated right wrist -- a major blow for a team with high expectations.

Team spokesman Jim Christman confirmed a Chicago Tribune report, saying, "Brian did have surgery this morning and he is out for the remainder of the season." Urlacher had said in a text message to the newspaper that his "season is over."
Urlacher apparently was injured in the first quarter of Sunday night's 21-15 loss at Green Bay making a tackle on Packers running back Ryan Grant. He left on the Packers' first drive of the second half.
Urlacher, a six-time Pro Bowl player, had started 49 consecutive games in his 10-year career and has missed a total of seven games -- all in 2004 with a hamstring injury.
The Bears have been in contact with free-agent linebacker Derrick Brooks to fill the void left by Urlacher's injury, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, and it's possible the Bears could sign Brooks as early as Monday.

All this is quite amusing, of course; it's fun to catch the kid with his hand in the cookie jar. But aside from eventually costing Valverde a few million bucks he probably couldn't spend anyway, I can't figure out how this revelation actually hurts anyone. Valverde -- who, by the way, isn't 32; apparently he'll turn 32 next April -- is pitching this season on a one-year deal for $8 million, and he's pitching sort of brilliantly.*
* Did you know that among all pitchers (past or present) with at least 300 career innings, only seven have struck out more than 11 batters per nine innings, and "Papa Grande" is one of them?
A 31-year-old relief pitcher who's doing brilliantly ... I have to think he's going to sign essentially the same deal this winter that he would sign if he were instead 29.

Hoki on News Blog Mac's : The world’s insatiable appetite for fish, with its disastrous effects on populations of favorites like red snapper, monkfish and tuna, has driven commercial fleets to deeper waters in search of creatures unlikely to star on the Food Network.
One of the most popular is the hoki, or whiptail, a bug-eyed specimen found far down in the waters around New Zealand and transformed into a major export. McDonald’s alone at one time used roughly 15 million pounds of it each year.
The hoki may be exceedingly unattractive, but when its flesh reaches the consumer it’s just fish — cut into filets and sticks or rolled into sushi — moist, slightly sweet and very tasty. Better yet, the hoki fishery was thought to be sustainable, providing New Zealand with a reliable major export for years to come.
But arguments over managing this resource are flaring not only between commercial interests and conservationists, but also among the environmental agencies most directly involved in monitoring and regulating the catch.
A lot of money is at stake, as well as questions about the effectiveness of global guidelines meant to limit the effects of industrial fishing.
Without formally acknowledging that hoki are being overfished, New Zealand has slashed the allowable catch in steps, from about 275,000 tons in 2000 and 2001 to about 100,000 tons in 2007 and 2008 — a decline of nearly two-thirds.
The scientific jury is still out, but critics warn that the hoki fishery is losing its image as a showpiece of oceanic sustainability.
“We have major concerns,” said Peter Trott, the fisheries program manager in Australia for the World Wildlife Fund, which closely monitors the New Zealand fishery.
The problems, he said, include population declines, ecosystem damage and the accidental killing of skates and sharks. He added that New Zealand hoki managers let industry “get as much as it can from the resource without alarm bells ringing.”
The hoki lives in inky darkness about a half-mile down and grows to more than four feet long, its body ending in a sinuous tail of great length. Large eyes give the fish a startled look.
Scientists say its fate represents a cautionary tale much like that of its heavily harvested forerunner, orange roughy. That deepwater fish reproduces slowly and lives more than 100 years. Around New Zealand, catches fell steeply in the early 1990s under the pressures of industrial fishing, in which factory trawlers work around the clock hauling in huge nets with big winches.
Hoki rose commercially as orange roughy fell. Its shorter life span (up to 25 years) and quicker pace of reproduction seemed to promise sustainable harvests. And its dense spawning aggregations, from June to September, made colossal hauls relatively easy.
As a result, the New Zealand Ministry of Fisheries set very high quotas — roughly 275,000 tons a year from 1996 to 2001. Dozens of factory trawlers plied the deep waters, and dealers shipped frozen blocks and fillets of the fish around the globe.
Moreover, the fishery won certification in March 2001 from the Marine Stewardship Council, a private fisheries assessment group in London, which called it sustainable and well managed. The group’s blue label became a draw for restaurant fish buyers.
“Most Americans have no clue that hoki is often what they’re eating in fried-fish sandwiches,” SeaFood Business, an industry magazine, reported in April 2001. It said chain restaurants using hoki included McDonald’s, Denny’s and Long John Silver’s.
Ominous signs of overfishing — mainly drops in hoki spawns — came soon thereafter. Criticism from ecological groups soared. The stewardship council promotes hoki as sustainable “in spite of falling fish stocks and the annual killing of hundreds of protected seals, albatross and petrels,” the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society of New Zealand said in May 2004.
When the stewardship council had to decide whether to recertify the hoki fishery as sustainable and well managed, the World Wildlife Fund, a Washington-based group that helped found the council, was strongly opposed. “The impacts of bottom trawling by the hoki fishery must be reduced,” the fund said.
The wildlife fund was overruled, and the council recertified the fishery in October 2007. At the same time, the New Zealand ministry cut the quota still further, reducing the allowable commercial catch from roughly 110,000 tons to about 100,000 tons.
Some restaurants cut back on hoki amid the declines and the controversy.
Last year, Yum Brands, which owns Long John Silver’s, issued a corporate responsibility report that cited its purchases of New Zealand hoki as praiseworthy because the fishery was “certified as sustainable.”
Now, Ben Golden, a Yum Brands spokesman, said hoki was “not on the menu.”
Denny’s said it served hoki only in its New Zealand restaurants.
Gary Johnson, McDonald’s senior director of global purchasing, said hoki use was down recently to about 11 million pounds annually from roughly 15 million pounds — a drop of about 25 percent. “It could go up if the quota goes up,” he said in an interview. He noted that McDonald’s also used other whitefish for its Filet-O-Fish sandwiches.
Mr. Johnson called the diminishing quotas a sign not of strain on fish stocks but of good management. “Everything we’ve seen and heard,” he said, “suggests the fishery is starting to come back.”
The Ministry of Fisheries agreed. “If you look at the current state of the fishery, it’s apparent that the string of management actions that we’ve taken, which came at severe economic impact, have been effective,” said Aoife Martin, manager of deepwater fisheries.
But the Blue Ocean Institute, a conservation group in East Norwich, N.Y., that scores seafood for ecological impact on a scale from green to red, still gives New Zealand hoki an unfavorable orange rating. The fish is less abundant over all, the group says, and the fishery “takes significant quantities of seabirds and fur seals.”
Mr. Trott of the wildlife fund was more pointed. He called the fishery’s management “driven by short-term gains at the expense of long-term rewards” — a characterization the ministry strongly rejects.
But he, too, held out the prospect of a turnaround that would raise the hoki’s abundance off New Zealand and significantly reduce levels of ecological damage and accidental killing.
“We are currently working with both industry and government to rectify all these issues,” he said. “Our hope is that we will see great change and willingness by industry and, importantly, government to improve the situation dramatically.”
